In 2012, the Comprehensive Indicator of the Supervision of Science and Technological Progress in Shanghai was 82.18%, topping China’s indicator for several years running.; among which, the Science and Technology (S&T)Progress Environment indicator was 79.21% (second in China), the input to S&T Activities Indicator was 74.85% (first in China), the output of S&T Activities Indicator was 97.58% (second in China), the Hi-tech Industrialization indicator was 76.74% (top in China), the economic and social development promoted by S&T indicator was 82.25% (1st in China).

In 2012, municipal R&D input reached 67.946 billion Yuan, an increase of 13.68% over the previous year; this input accounted for 3.37% of Shanghai’s GDP, ranking second in China, among which enterprise expenditures on R&D amounted to 41.361 billion Yuan, accounting for 60.87% of total R&D expenditures in 2013.

Shanghai has 37 certified enterprise technical centers, with 5,140 new high-tech enterprises (up from2013). In 2012, total patent applications and authorization in Shanghai amounted to 82,682 and 51,508 pieces respectively, among which patent applications and authorization for inventions amounted to 37,139 and 11,379 pieces respectively, with the patent applications for inventions per million people reaching 1,560 pieces.

In the past years, Shanghai has received numerous important national S&T awards. In 2013, there were in total 52 awardees granted annual national science and technology awards in Shanghai, accounting for 16% of the total awards in China. This has continued Shanghai’s double digit growth in S&T awards for twelfth consecutive year. Among them, 2 people received the prestigious China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award-- accounting for 1/4 that of the awards nationally.

Currently, Shanghai is home to 67 colleges and universities, 14 scientific research institutions under CAS Shanghai Branch, and 165 academics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
